Click the Convert\/Save button to rip the DVD.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-308647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/xvlcdvd03-650.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.w0ARJEQ0zy.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"479\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You may also want to select\u00a0\u201cNo disc menus\u201d here, since VLC can occasionally get\u00a0tripped up trying to\u00a0convert a looping\u00a0video menu.<\/p>\n<div class=\"htg-lazyload\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>There are a few other settings here you can tweak, too. Under Starting Position, you can choose which title and chapter you want to rip. If you\u2019re interested in ripping special features, or just part of the movie, you can change these settings, but\u00a0if you\u00a0just want the movie, you can leave this at the default. Under Audio and Subtitles, you can similarly choose which audio and subtitle track you want to rip. If you\u2019d prefer to grab a language other than the default or include embedded subtitles, you can choose them\u00a0here.\u00a0To change any of\u00a0these four settings,\u00a0type in the number of the track, title, or chapter you want to start with. You may need to do some trial and error to figure out which track is the one you want.<\/p>\n<p>Once you click Convert, you can choose\u00a0what type of\u00a0codec and container you want to use to encode your rip. By default, VLC will choose an H.264 video codec, MP3 audio format, in an MP4 container. This preset should work\u00a0for\u00a0any\u00a0DVD, but if you want to\u00a0change anything, click the Tools icon to the left of the Profile drop down box.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re satisfied with your profile choice (or if you want to stick\u00a0with the default), click Browse to pick a name and location for your file.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-308653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/xvlcdvd04-650.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.Hr8EUSfQi0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pick where you want to output your video file, then give it a name. At the end, be sure to include the file extension (in this case, .mp4). If you don\u2019t include this, VLC\u00a0won\u2019t rip\u00a0the movie properly. When you\u2019re done, click Save.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-308654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/xvlcdvd05-650.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.Tyrs0zZ-jn.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"436\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back on the Convert screen, click Start to begin ripping the movie.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-308655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/xvlcdvd06-650.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.w0pI3jLk2C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"431\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once it begins, you can see a progress bar along the bottom. Technically, VLC is \u201cstreaming\u201d the video to a file on your hard drive, so it will\u00a0take\u00a0the entire runtime of the movie to rip it.
